Green Appliances Rebates – Coming Soon Near You

Written by: Sarfaraz Nasir

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced around $300 million rebate program for number of states for energy efficient appliances. The amount of rebate varies depending on the state and appliance. The program is similar to the cash-for clunker auto rebates in 2009. The main objectives of the program is to improve energy efficiency and stimulate the economy.

The consumers who replace their used appliances with energy efficient appliances will be eligible to receive the rebate. However, each state can set its own additional set of eligibility rules. So, consumers should check the eligibility criteria for their own state to confirm. The amount of rebate could vary depending on the type of appliance, purchase price, and other market factors. The estimated rebate is in the range of $50 to $250. Although the states are given until February 2012 to spend the money, the money is likely to go quickly.

The DOE has recommended states to select from below appliances to qualify for the rebate:

  • Boilers
  • Central air conditioners
  • Clothes washers
  • Dishwashers
  • Freezers
  • Furnaces (oil and gas)
  • Heat pumps (air source and geothermal)
  • Refrigerators
  • Room air conditioners
  • Water heaters
