The First Eco-friendly Service Station

The Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC) last month announced to open Middle East’s first “green” service station. The new service station will be open in the first half of 2010 at Emirates Hills in Dubai. The energy conservation and commitment to a better community are the two main objectives of the initiative.
The new eco-friendly service station will use the latest available technologies and state-of-the-art systems to reduce environmental impacts. For instance, the cutting edge vapor recovery system will prevent toxic fumes to escape in the environment to avoid occupational and environmental hazards. The electricity consumption will be reduced by using solar powered pole and LED lightings in the service station.
The service station focuses on water conservation. The carwash water will be recycled. The service station will also provide customers the option to use a waterless car wash system. The new waterless concept saves water and uses No-Wet technique using all-in-one eco-friendly car wash liquid that is made of all natural ingredients. The product does not contain any harmful chemicals that pollutes water. In addition, the sensor water taps and highly conservative two stage toilet system will be installed throughout the station.
The “green” service station will use the latest garbage segregation system making recycling easier for customers. The used lubricants oil will be collected and disposed responsibly. The furniture used in the service station will be from recycled materials as well.
The new service station will reduce the noise pollution by incorporating a sound barrier on the compound wall. A centralized vacuum system will be used to conserve power, reduce waste and noise.
ENOC also plans to sell some of its line of eco-friendly products at the new service station. Some of the eco-friendly products include; the engine oils PROTEC Green for gasoline engines and VULCAN Green for diesel engines, the Very Low Sulfur Diesel (VLSD), and Hiclone fuel-saving devices.
Finally, the new “green” service station will only use biodegradable plastic bags.

Fantastic! This is how our businesses need to be…if more follow your examples we might be able to have a positive impact on our environment. I would add that in addition to the facilities businesses need to continue looking for more environmentally friendly packaging and products. We are an environmental company that is trying to reduce plastic bottle pollution and have developed a biodegradable plastic bottle.
Plastic is an important aspect to all of our lives and I believe that plastic products and packaging can be designed to be more environmentally friendly.
