Is “Carbon Tax” the best way to reduce greenhouse gases?

Written by: Admin

The existing cap-and-trade and offsets programs to reduce the greenhouse gases do not seem to be achieving their goals. Public officials, environmental leaders, policy experts, and general public are increasingly focusing on the carbon tax as a new way to reduce the greenhouse gases.

Ralph Nader said, “we simply cannot stem the free flow of greenhouse gases (GHG) without making them more expensive to emit. If we must pay to pollute, we will opt to pollute less”. He estimated that an initial price of $50 per ton of carbon dioxide would generate $300 billions in revenue, creating 10 million new green collar jobs.

The Carbon Tax Center is a non-profit organization and proponent of carbon tax. The organization proposes a phased in approach to carbon tax giving households and businesses sufficient time to adapt. The organization also suggest revenue-neutral model in which the government should offset the carbon tax by reducing some other taxes.

Although the support for carbon tax is growing, many people still have different views. The opponents of carbon tax do not believe that it would not guarantee emissions reductions. Instead, they believe the added tax will increase burden especially on the businesses.

Do you think carbon tax is the best way to reduce greenhouse gases?

No one will like any new tax deducted from their pay check. However, as long as the new tax offsets with some other tax, it is a good idea. While we are at it, can we also reduce some payroll tax? It hurts even more when you have to pay tax on the bonuses for general public.

It would be great for your paycheck to get a carbon tax – how about 100%. There is no need since global warming and greenhouse gases are BS

A revenue-neutral carbon tax is absolutely the best way to reduce gg emissions; it avoids the evasion and market manipulation of cap and trade while reducing emissions, incentivizing “green” R&D AND returning revenue to families already struggling under the weight of the current economic downturn. I certainly hope that Congress pays attention and at least includes a carbon tax in the discussion.
