The First “Green” Skyscraper in New York

The New York city saw its first “Green” high rise building in 2006 when the construction of the Hearst Tower completed. The design of the building included number of eco-friendly considerations.
Almost 90% of the structural steel contained recycled materials. Polyethylene tubing is embedded under the floor maintains the cooling in the summer and heating in the winter. Even the rain water is recycled. The rain water collected on the roof and stored in a tank in the basement of the building used in the cooling system, to irrigate plants and for the water sculpture in the main lobby. The building is designed to use 26% less energy than the minimum requirements for the city of New York.
All of these environmental considerations helped the building receive a gold designation from the United States Green Building Council’s LEED certification program, making the building first “Green” building in the city.
